Microsoft builds its own AI models — moving away from OpenAI dependency
What it really says
Microsoft's MAI team released three proprietary models: MAI-Transcribe-1 (speech-to-text, 25 languages, better than Whisper), MAI-Voice-1 (text-to-speech), and MAI-Image-2 (image generation). Microsoft is distancing itself from sole dependence on OpenAI.
Our assessment
More competition is good for everyone. When Microsoft, Google, Anthropic, and Meta build their own models, prices drop and dependence on a single provider decreases. For users this means: more choice, better prices, and no vendor lock-in.
Relevance for Germany
Many German companies use Microsoft 365 and Azure. Proprietary Microsoft models could be cheaper than OpenAI models and integrate better with existing infrastructure.
Fact check
The three models were officially announced on the Microsoft blog. Benchmark comparisons with Whisper and other models are published.
