EU delays AI law — but bans nudifier apps immediately

Source: European Parliament·March 26, 2026

What it really says

The EU Parliament voted 569 to 45 to postpone deadlines for high-risk AI systems to December 2027. Simultaneously, an immediate ban on nudifier apps was passed — AI systems that create sexually explicit images of real people without consent. Transparency requirements (watermarks, deepfake labeling) are expected by November 2026.

Our assessment

A mixed decision: The nudifier ban clearly protects victims — women and minors are primarily affected by these tools. The high-risk deadline extension gives companies breathing room but also means: AI systems in policing, border control, and hiring remain unregulated longer. Amnesty International sharply criticized this delay.

Relevance for Germany

Directly applicable EU law. German authorities and companies get more preparation time. For citizens: protection from high-risk AI comes later than promised.

Fact check

Voting results are publicly available. 569 yes, 45 no. Amnesty criticized the delay in an official statement.
