ChatGPT market share falls below 50 percent for the first time - the AI market is diversifying

What it really says

According to Sensor Tower's State of AI Report, ChatGPT's global market share fell to 46.4 percent in May 2026 - the first time since its November 2022 launch that OpenAI's chatbot holds less than half the market. In December 2025, its share was still at 52.8 percent, and in December 2024 at 65.3 percent. The winners are Google Gemini with 27.7 percent market share (December 2024: 18.2 percent) and Anthropic's Claude with 10.3 percent (December 2025: just 3 percent - a fourfold increase in five months). Importantly, ChatGPT is losing market share despite continuing to add users. Monthly active users rose from 1.05 billion in December 2025 to 1.11 billion in May 2026. The market is simply growing faster than ChatGPT: Google Gemini grew from 533 to 662 million monthly users, while Claude exploded from 60.2 million to 245 million - a fourfold increase in just five months. The total AI assistant market across the 25 surveyed markets now exceeds 2.4 billion monthly users.

Our assessment

This story warrants a green rating because it counters one of the most common AI fears: the concern that a single company could dominate the AI market and become a monopolist. The opposite is happening. The market is measurably diversifying: three major providers with independently developed technology now share the market, and numerous additional alternatives exist. This is decidedly positive from a consumer perspective: more competition means lower prices, better products, and less dependence on a single provider. Claude's explosive growth is particularly noteworthy: the fourfold increase in user numbers within five months shows that users are actively seeking alternatives and finding them. At the same time, one should remain realistic: ChatGPT still holds an enormous lead with 1.11 billion monthly users. And three large providers instead of one is better, but not yet a fully open market. The direction, however, is right: the AI market is moving away from a quasi-monopoly toward genuine competition.

Relevance for Germany

This development is positive for Germany for several reasons. First, German consumers and businesses directly benefit from increased competition: when three major providers compete for customers, prices drop and product quality improves - an effect already visible in the significantly lower prices for AI APIs in recent months. Second, diversification reduces geopolitical risk: when the US government blocked Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models via export controls in June 2026, European users still had access to OpenAI and Google - an advantage that would not have existed under a monopoly. Third, competition strengthens the position of European regulators: it is easier to enforce rules when providers are competing for the EU market and cannot afford to ignore it. Fourth, the user numbers show that AI assistants have become a mass technology in Germany - underscoring the urgency of both AI literacy education and consumer protection.

Fact check

The market share data comes from Sensor Tower's State of AI Report, a recognized market research firm for app analytics. The figures (ChatGPT 46.4 percent, Gemini 27.7 percent, Claude 10.3 percent) are consistently reported by TechCrunch, Fast Company, Business Standard, and other sources. The monthly user numbers (ChatGPT 1.11 billion, Gemini 662 million, Claude 245 million) also come from the Sensor Tower report. The historical comparison values (ChatGPT 65.3 percent in December 2024, 52.8 percent in December 2025) are consistently documented across all sources. Important: the figures refer to 25 surveyed markets and include both web and app usage - methodological details about the exact data collection process are not fully publicly available.
