Anthropic launches 'Claude Managed Agents' - autonomous AI agents as a cloud service for enterprises

On 8 April 2026 Anthropic released 'Claude Managed Agents' in public beta - a suite of composable APIs that let developers and enterprises build and run autonomous AI agents on Anthropic's cloud infrastructure. The agents can read files, execute commands, browse the web and run code in a sandboxed environment. Core features include checkpointing (a multi-hour task does not restart from zero after a network blip), sandbox isolation, scoped permissions, identity management and end-to-end tracing. Pricing: standard token costs plus USD 0.08 per active session-hour (idle time is not billed); web searches cost an additional USD 10 per 1,000 queries. Early enterprise customers include Notion, Rakuten, Asana, Sentry and Vibecode, deploying agents for code automation, HR processes and productivity workflows. Our assessment
Claude Managed Agents is a logical next step: after chatbots answered individual questions, AI agents are now supposed to carry out multi-step tasks autonomously over longer periods - editing files, running code, browsing the web, making decisions. This is attractive for enterprises because it saves development time, but it raises legitimate questions. First: who is liable when an agent makes a mistake in a corporate setting - say, sends an incorrect HR notice or deploys buggy code? Anthropic offers sandboxing and tracing, but legal responsibility sits with the customer. Second: the agents run entirely on Anthropic's infrastructure, creating dependency and data protection questions, especially for European companies processing sensitive data. Third: the trend toward autonomy is real, but the reliability of today's models for critical, unsupervised tasks is unproven. The low barrier to entry (USD 0.08 per hour) makes it easy to deploy agents - the question is whether companies also build the governance to match.
Relevance for Germany
For German companies the central question is: may and should they use AI agents that act autonomously? The EU AI Act classifies AI systems that independently make decisions with significant impact on individuals as high-risk systems, with obligations around risk assessment, human oversight and documentation. Claude Managed Agents is primarily a developer tool, but if an agent autonomously pre-screens job applications, processes credit requests or evaluates employee feedback, AI Act obligations apply. Companies experimenting with the beta should check early whether their use case falls under a high-risk category. Additionally: data processing takes place on Anthropic's US servers - GDPR compliance depends on contractual arrangements and on whether the US-EU Data Privacy Framework suffices. The Bundesnetzagentur, Germany's future AI market surveillance authority, will have such services on its radar.
